| The UK capital is in discussions with suppliers as it aims to advance its capital wide e-government programme The Greater London Authority is considering the use of open source software, a London wide e-services system and closer work with the private sector as it moves on with its e-government programme. The authority's e-government agency, known as London Connects, has commissioned industry group Open Forum Europe to produce a study on the use of open source software by public sector organisations in the capital. The move follows support from Whitehall for open source software and is in line with EU attempts to promote the technology among European member states. London Connects is looking for partners to participate in its open source work and is also launching a "private sector panel" on 16 December 2002. The aim is to explore ways that suppliers can “engage and work” with the capital’s e-government projects, according to the agency. It has already held talks with Cisco, BT, Cable and Wireless and the London Grid for Learning about setting up a capital wide public services network. The London Connects team now hopes to commission a study covering the scope of the network and how it would set it up.
