Half of Hungary loses Internet for hours
Sunday, 25, January 2009 07:13:00 PM
A cable disruption and then the overload and malfunction of a network appliance has shot half of Hungary's Internet access on Sunday. Most of the services have been restored by 16:00 CET after the unprecedented shutdown.

An optical cable in Magyar Telekom's network was accidentally cut around 11:15 CET today in Baranya County. Then a network tool overloaded and crashed at T-Online's local server hub. These brought MTel Group's entire IP (Internet Protocol) traffic to a complete halt, the group's communications department told local news portal index.hu.

The malfunction affected both landline and mobile data traffic. The crashed appliance was restored by 15:00 CET. Data services were back partly from 14:00 and almost fully by 16:00.

Besides the units at Data Park there was also no access to Origo.hu, Freemail, as well as every webpage of the T-Group and services operated at its server hub.

The malfunction affected webmail services, the sites of banks, the Budapest Transport Company (BKV) and the National Election Office, as well.

While MTel's technicians are still working on the problem, it is not yet known whether the nationwide crash was a consequence of bad system planning or a series of unfortunate events.
